How Long Should You Keep Your Toothbrush?

Dental Tips

Dentists suggest to replace toothbrushes at least every three to four months. If you have had your toothbrush for only one month, and you have a cold or sinus infection, throw it away! There is no reason to re-infect yourself from using this toothbrush. Throwing your toothbrush out after three months seems like a short time, but think of the germs, viruses and bacteria it is exposed to daily. A clean mouth is a happy mouth!

Toothbrush bristles become frayed and worn with use and cleaning effectiveness will decrease. Toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. Check brushes often for this type of wear and replace them more frequently if needed. A great tip is to buy toothbrushes in packs of six or so and keep them in your bathroom to make switching toothbrushes easy! Mark your calendar every three months to remind yourself that it is time to replace. Both electric and manual toothbrushes require changing.

Children

Children’s toothbrushes often need replacing more frequently than adult brushes because children tend to brush more vigorously. You can also kill germs by soaking your toothbrush in an antiseptic mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide for about an hour, then rinse it and dry it. A fun tip is to brush your teeth with your kids in the morning to teach them healthy brushing habits!

Other Tips

While traveling it is important to keep your toothbrush clean and safe. Keep your toothbrush in a plastic bag or travel size carrier to ensure it does not contract germs or other viruses. It is also important to let your toothbrush dry out in open air. This reduces the spread of germs. Keep brushing!!
